Remember Where You Came From

Modern humans are nothing if not incredible at engineering every inconvenience out of our lives. But it’s comes at a cost. Without the need to climb or even reach overhead, we’ve lost the fundamental function that our shoulders (and consequentially the rest of our bodies) were designed for.

At a primordial level, the human shoulder girdle was built to brachiate (fancy word for “hang”). We are designed to be curious explorers—to navigate through trees and mountainous terrain—and that doesn’t come without the ability to grip, hang, and pull, as evidenced by a short spine (particularly the lumbar spine), short fingernails (instead of claws), long curved fingers well suited for grasping, reduced thumbs, long forelimbs, and flexible and freely rotating wrists. Perhaps these traits are remnants from our brachiating ancestors, but more importantly, they indicate a biological demand to continue reaching up, hanging, and pulling for optimal health.
